SK Brann face a major gap in their attack after Rabbi Matondo leaves the club. The Welsh international, who previously played for Rangers, is now set to join Sheffield United in the Championship. The decision to allow him to train with the Blades came after his short spell at Brann - a stint that was already winding down.
What happened with Rabbi Matondo?
Matondo arrived at Brann in the winter window, but his time in Eliteserien was brief. After limited minutes in Scotland, he was permitted to train with Sheffield United to earn a permanent move. The winger impressed during pre-season in Spain with the Blades, featuring in friendlies against Levante and a closed-door game against Huddersfield Town. League standing: 6th in Eliteserien, 19 pts, 6W-1D-7L from 14 games, recent form WWLLL.
According to The Star, a decision on Matondo’s future with United is expected this week. Derby County and Middlesbrough have also been linked with the Wales international after opting against extending his time at SK Brann.
Why is this a problem for Brann?
Brann lose one of their most promising attackers at a critical moment. With just 19 points from 14 games and a poor recent form of WWLLL, the club needs goal scorers to turn things around. Matondo contributed 2 goals and 3 assists in his short spell, but his exit leaves a gap in an attack already struggling to find the net - only 28 goals in 14 matches so far.
The title race is also slipping away. With 12 points behind Tromsø and weak home form, every point matters. Their next home game is against Lillestrøm on September 5, a match that could prove decisive in the top-four fight.
What’s next for Brann?
Brann’s sporting director and coaching staff must act fast to replace Matondo’s pace and creativity. The club already deals with injuries to Eggert Aron Guðmundsson and Sakarias Opsahl, limiting options for immediate reinforcements. Goals this season: 28 scored, 22 conceded (+6 goal difference).
It remains unclear if Brann can land a replacement before the transfer window closes. With a shaky defense and a need for offensive firepower, turning the season around will be tough. But with a home game against Lillestrøm in six weeks, Brann have a chance to take crucial points before the next big test.
SK Brann currently sit sixth in Eliteserien, and every point counts in the race for European spots.
