Sportsklubben Brann suffered another disappointing Eliteserien defeat, losing 1-2 to Lillestrøm at home on September 5th. The loss intensifies discussion around the team's poor form and defensive frailties.
Jonas Grønner was sharp in his post-match assessment. He described Brann as a team that is not functioning, making it extra difficult for new signings like Leo Cornic and Neraysho Kjanariwjo. Grønner pointed specifically to the club being late in recent transfer windows, which he believes is unsustainable. Brann currently sit in a disappointing 7th place in the Eliteserien with 26 points from 19 games. They have scored 37 goals but conceded 29, and trail league leaders Bodø/Glimt by a massive 21 points. Their recent form shows a loss and a draw.
The match began as a nightmare for Brann with two costly concessions within the first 22 minutes. First, Thore Pedersen lost the ball to Félix Vá, who scored to make it 1-0 after just six minutes. Then, a communication failure between Vetle Dragsnes and goalkeeper Mathias Dyngeland allowed Fredrik Gulbrandsen to sneak in a second goal. TV 2 commentator Morten Langli called the goals "very strange". Jonas Grønner was even harsher, describing the first half as "completely incredibly messy" and a continuation of the weak performance against Sandefjord the previous weekend. Defender Vetle Dragsnes took responsibility at halftime for the weak header that led to the second goal.
Brann coach Eirik Horneland admitted to TV 2 that the two early mistakes defined the rest of the match. He said the errors create stress in a team already struggling to find its natural rhythm. Horneland stressed that the symptoms of a functioning collective are not present. "We are a fragile football team, a bit of a fragile collective, and a team searching a bit for its form," said Horneland. He added that the team was rhythmless, inaccurate, and heavy both mentally and physically throughout the match. Bård Finne pulled one back late for 1-2, but it wasn't enough for a point.
The game was also marked by several injury issues, particularly for Lillestrøm. Espen Garnås had to be substituted after just four minutes due to an injury. Later, Kristian Eriksen collided heavily with Lillestrøm goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg, an incident Jonas Grønner described as "very ugly". Dahlberg was down for several minutes before continuing. For Brann, Jonas Torsvik and Sakarias Opsahl are currently sidelined, further testing the squad's depth. You can keep track of player status on our injuries page.
After another defeat, Brann must shake off the disappointment quickly. The next task is an away match against Start, who sit in 16th place, on September 13th. This represents an opportunity for Brann to reverse the trend and secure important points. View the full schedule on fixtures.
